It’s 1943 and America is in the middle of WWII. To Cora Jean Harris, being raised in Denver Orphan’s Home and having to wear second-hand clothes has always meant being teased and ridiculed by others. In rebellion, Jeannie sneaks out to dance with the soldiers at the USO, never expecting to meet a man like Mac Benson, a handsome, blond soldier with a southern accent who offers her the one thing she has always longed for—love.
Mac Benson grew up on a farm in southern America. When he joins the Army Air Corp, he is sent to Denver, Colorado for training, never expecting to meet the love of his life. He will ship out in a few short days, but his Jeanie must leave the orphanage when she turns eighteen in two weeks. Since he is worried about her living alone in Denver once he leaves for overseas, he arranges for her to live with his parents in North Carolina until he returns and they can get married.
Jeannie is a little apprehensive, but excited to arrive in North Carolina, never expecting a few local girls are plotting to ruin her reputation. Sensitive to the gossip about her "stealing" Mac from another girl, she wonders if he lied to her about not having a "girl back home." Can she survive the drastic change in culture and being the outsider again? Will she be waiting if Mac returns home alive?
